Devotion for April 30, 2025

You know, we talk a lot in the church about love, unity and forgiveness. And rightly so. But there are times when Scripture actually encourages a different response; distance. Romans 16:17 says, “I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them.”

That’s strong language. Paul is warning about people inside the church who continue to stir up unscriptural and worldly conflict or pull others off course. And he’s not saying fight with them. He’s not saying to shame them publicly. He simply says, keep away. It’s a reminder that boundaries aren’t unloving. Sometimes stepping back is the most faithful thing that we can do.

In fact, Jesus himself walked away from crowds, disengaged from arguments, and created space from those who were trying to manipulate or accuse him. Now, this isn’t a license to cut people off over disagreements or to avoid hard conversations. But if someone is consistently causing harm even after grace has been offered, it’s okay to protect your peace. It’s okay to create space, not out of spite, but actually out of hope.

Pray and live in hope that God will work in that space, perhaps to bring repentance, healing, and a healthier future connection.

Prayer

Lord, give me wisdom to know when to lean in and when to step back. Help me set boundaries that are rooted in love, not fear, and in the spaces where I step away I ask You to step in. Bring clarity, peace, and, if possible, reconciliation. But above all, guard my heart and guide my steps. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

Stay encouraged!
