Devotion for January 22, 2021

Do you really think you can solve all your problems on your own? Do you really believe that you have the wisdom needed to fix your life?

Proverbs 14:12 reminds us, “There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.”

God’s solutions aren’t always complicated or difficult. In fact, they are often so simple that we brush them aside and rely on our human wisdom. We think, “Surely it can’t be that easy,” as we try to fix things on our own. But throughout Scripture we see Him calling for a simple act of faith.

A spirit restored through repentance. Holding up a staff. Putting our feet in the water. Marching around an enormous wall seven times. Or dipping in the muddy Jordan river.

Remember what Isaiah 55:8 tells us: “‘For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,’ declares the Lord.” This verse doesn’t say that God’s thoughts involve more complex and difficult solutions. It just says that God’s thoughts and ways are different from what we would expect. Far too often we miss our U-turn in our lives because we try to complicate things with our own solutions. We try to get our hands into the mix. But God has it already planned out. We increase our pain and extend our misery because we refuse to let go and trust the One who knows best.

Prayer
Lord, keep our pride from getting in the way of your problem solving, for your kingdom sake. Amen.
